Cho1 Ha6

This piece is based on different levels of reading of Petrarca's poem with the same title. Premiered by Cosimo Profita during the Livorno Music Festival, in Livorno, Italy, Aug 2023.

Patina

The title, Patina, refers to a unqiue kind of organic material transformation through time, akin to the unexpected yet distinctive beauty of the patina formed on aged, weathered metal. Premiered by Siwan Rhys, March 2023, Leeds, UK.

Recursion

Multi-percussion solo written for Brian Archinal. This piece maps pitch space hierarchy from AI generated data onto timbre hierarchy. For instance, skin instruments are the most prominant, followed by wood and metal instruments.

Markov Patterns

Algorithmically generated music embodied by percussionist Steven Moore. Recorded on March 2022.

Flou

For Mira Benjamin, this piece explores a co-attempt between the performer and the composer to embody otherwise unidiomatic algorithmically generated music.

Adrift

Written for Seth Josel, Adrift uses James Tenney's method of approximating just ratios with the 72-TET scale. The gutiar scordatura is played with natural harmonics only to achieve microtonality that is as accurate as humanly possible.

Stillness

Part of a portfolio of pieces titled Four Pieces with Cognitive Constraints which explores a generative system based on Fred Lerdahl's 16 Cognitive Constraints.

Vertigo

As its name suggests, this piece plays on cyclical thematic materials on a range of extended techniques on the alto saxophone. Recording by Shaohui Hao.

Niflheim

Written for Heather Roche, this piece was inspired by the dark, misty, and freezing realm of the Old Norse. Breath sounds, hollow timbres and slow moving bass notes are used to respond to its theme.

The Lost Meadow

This piece juxtaposes a range of flute extended techniques with the typical flute timbre which has been frequently associated with rural, greenery landscapes. Recording by Nicholas Sabisky

Three Musings for Piano

A set of three miniatures for solo piano.

Illumination

Illumination explores the wide range of dynamics, register, and timbral colour available on the accordion, ranging from expressive high note vibratos to low register cluster chords. Recording by Bartosz Głowacki.

Hineni: Here I am

This piece is for solo soprano with piano accompaniment. The voice part is comprised of 9 short haikus written by Ruth Steinberg, which describe 9 fragments of her husband Len's life story from 1937 Krakow to 1985 Leeds.

Fire and Ice

Fire and Ice (2019) for Soprano, Clarinet, Harp and Double Bass. Poem in public domain by Robert Frost, recording by The Hermes Experiment, who premiered it in March 2019, Blackheath Halls.

Recurrence

The Kingma-system flutes are interestingly capable of consistently and accurately playing quartertones. With that in mind, this piece is an attempt to create interesting harmonies witch such a unique combination of flutes. Recording by Rarescale Flute Academy who premiered it in March 2019, Royal Holloway Picture Gallery.

12 × 12

This piece uses a set of numerical permutations in a grid of 12x12 to generate its materials. Each integer between 1 to 12 is positioned in a way such that no integer is repeated in each row, each column, and in each 4×3 box in the table. Recording by the Smith Quartet.

Hard Choices

This piece uses indeterminate pitch where singers can choose what note to sing. Recording by CoMa Voices, directed by Sarah Leonard.

Ensemble Works

Kitsune no Botan

This piece is inspired by Saijō Yaso's (⻄條八⼗) 1919 horror poem, titled 'Tomino's Hell' (トミノの地獄).

Coalescence

Coalescence, for any five sustaining instruments, situates each player's individual intuition in the foreground of how the piece would unfold.

Śūnyatā

For flute, bassoon, horn, guitar, violin, and cello. The materials are generated from the text of the buddhist heart sutra. The score is notated semi-indeterminately in space-time notation, where musicians are free to interpret events in reaction to what the rest of the ensemble is playing.

Indecision

Recording by Trinity Laban New Music Ensemble.

Angular Intersections

This very short orchestral piece uses pointilistic orchestration to create interesting timbral textures.
